Intertwined measures learning as mastery — how well a student has demonstrated understanding of a lesson, module, or unit. This article explains how mastery and progress are tracked and how retakes fit in.
What Mastery Means
Mastery is a performance score based on how students answer quiz questions, aggregated up by lesson and by module. In the gradebook it's shown with color codes so you can spot strengths and gaps at a glance — see 8.2 Reading the Mastery Color Codes for exactly what each color represents.
Progress States
Alongside mastery, each student has a progress state for their coursework:
Not Started — The student hasn't opened the lesson or quiz yet.
In Progress — They've begun but haven't completed it.
Completed — They've finished the lesson and its assessment.
Retakes
Retakes let students revisit a quiz to strengthen understanding, and question variants (see 6.2) keep the practice meaningful rather than rote. As students improve, their mastery updates in the gradebook and performance charts, so you can watch growth over time rather than a single snapshot.
